Point and shoot type focusing using LCD instead of optical viewfinder.
40D: yes, preview magnification is possible
30D: no

Here is the demonstration of live view on 40D. Not so useful if one does not know japanese (maybe?) but a good demo how fast pictures can be taken with live view.
